LSA Yields Another Ground-Breaking Aircraft

One of my unexpected (though not unpleasant) surprises at the Sport Aviation Expo was happening upon a display for a company called Advanced Aero where I met Chris Gagliano and Shane Smith. What caught my eye was the striking design of the aircraft flying in a simulation on large screens at the back of their display. That aircraft, the V100 Vortex, is the result of a significant and well thought-out design effort. That process came up with a design that has some very unique and attractive features:

Gemini's Diesel LSA Engine on Track

I got an unexpected treat at the Sport Aviation Expo when I happened to catch the folks at the Gemini engine display for a few minutes. Ted mentioned the Gemini 100 diesel engine intended for Light Sport Aircraft a few months ago. Back then it sounded cool, but I wasn't sure how much we could expect from such a new idea. I'm happy to say that the development of the Gemini 100 is going well and the company, Powerplant Dynamics (site still under construction,) will be delivering their first engine to Tencam Aircraft on March 25th.

Remos Still Climbing

Another company that did a great job getting me excited for the Sport Aviation Expo was Remos Aircraft. They contacted me weeks before show to invite me to a dinner at which they were going to make a big announcement. Unfortunately, I didn't make it down to the show in time for dinner, but I did get to talk with Remos' David Gustafson on Saturday. He was kind enough to fill me in on the release of their 2009 Remos GX models and show them off to me. I was very impressed.

Dylan Finds Paradise

Chances are, you've recently read about Jessica Cox, a young lady who received her Sport Pilot rating in an Ercoupe...even though she was born without arms. We're really excited for her and the contributions she is making to aviation!

Although the Ercoupe was the perfect aircraft for Jessica, as a low-wing aircraft it would be a little less convenient for someone who doesn't have the use of his or her legs. Ercoupes are also vintage aircraft and generally lack the niceties of many new LSAs on the market. Both of these issues were concerns of Dylan Redd, an aspiring pilot who gets around with the help of a wheel chair. One of the main reasons I went to the Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring this year was to learn more about Dylan and his experience with Paradise. You can read his story in his own words on the Aviation Portal, but I'm going to tell the story again here in hopes that more people will get to read it.

Another LSA Engine Option

A Google Ad, of all things, just pointed me to a Belgian engine manufacturer named ULPower that offers yet another option for powering kit and Light Sport Aircraft. Why should you care? How about having the safety, simplicity and performance of a FADEC system in your LSA?
